It’s very easy for us to not feel appreciated or to neglect the act of showing appreciation to others, often without even realizing it. In our fast-paced lives, we might overlook the importance of expressing gratitude, leading to a cycle where appreciation becomes a rare commodity. That feeling of appreciation is akin to a rush of endorphins surging through your body, creating a sense of warmth and happiness that can uplift your mood and enhance your overall well-being. This euphoric sensation is a significant reason why people genuinely enjoy being told that they are appreciated; it validates their efforts and reinforces their sense of self-worth. However, in the hustle and bustle of daily life, it is all too easy to fall into a state of complacency. We may become so accustomed to the routine interactions with family, friends, colleagues, and even service providers that we forget to acknowledge their contributions. This lack of recognition can lead to feelings of unappreciation not only in others but also within ourselves. As humans, I believe we have an intrinsic need to experience that rush of appreciation from time to time, akin to an adrenaline rush that invigorates our spirits.

This is a significant factor in why some individuals are naturally inclined to be kind and generous—because they have experienced the positive effects of appreciation and wish to share that joy with others. When we frequently interact with the same people or entities that perform kind acts for us, it becomes all too easy to overlook the necessity of expressing our gratitude. We might take their kindness for granted, assuming they know how much we value their efforts. This tendency mirrors childhood lessons when our parents would remind us to say “please” and “thank you.” But why do they emphasize these simple phrases? Because it is not only the polite thing to do, but it also fosters a culture of respect and acknowledgment. In a broader context, showing appreciation can create a ripple effect. When we express gratitude, it encourages a cycle of positivity and kindness that can extend beyond our immediate interactions. It cultivates an environment where people feel valued and motivated to continue their good deeds, reinforcing the social bonds that connect us all. Therefore, recognizing the importance of appreciation in our daily lives is crucial. We should strive to break the cycle of complacency and actively seek opportunities to express our gratitude, whether through a heartfelt thank-you note, a verbal acknowledgment, or a simple gesture of kindness. By doing so, we not only uplift others but also enrich our own lives, fostering a more compassionate and appreciative world.
